Marika and Stefan Weiss are back to living their dream.
The couple reopened Peter’s German Ice Cream & Coffee Shop in a new downtown Fort Myers location on Monday, May 15.
“It already is like home to us,” Marika said of their charming spot on Dean Street, which was once home to Green Cup Cafe. “We did a lot of remodeling work. It flooded after the hurricane. We repainted and made minor changes. It’s cute.”

The Weisses originally opened their popular shop on Hendry Street in August 2021 but had to vacate in January after other plans for the space were made.
They found the Dean Street location in early February.
“I couldn’t have imagined being closed for five months,” said Marika. “It took a lot of time for everything.”
The couple came to the United States from Germany in April 2021 with one goal in mind.
“We came to work,” Marika said. “Stefan always wanted to have an ice cream shop in Florida. He loves warm weather and ice cream. He told me when we met (in 2013) that he wanted to move to Florida one day. After COVID we said, ‘Let’s go. If we don’t do it now, we never will.’”
All-natural ice cream for you and your pup
Ice cream in the U.S. is different than what they were used to.
“For us, American ice cream is very sweet,” she said. “We wanted to bring our love of food to Americans. We only use natural ingredients in everything we do. There are no artificial ingredients.”
Stefan makes 15 flavors of ice cream, with hazelnut, After Eight (mint chocolate) and mango, “Made from real mangoes,” the most popular.
There’s also an extra special flavor.

“We have dog ice cream,” Marika said. “It’s liverwurst and honey. You can eat it if you really want but it’s not really good for our taste. Dogs love it. They can eat in the courtyard.”
The outdoor area is something their last location didn’t have.
“The courtyard is beautiful,” Marika said. “It is very cozy. We love it.”
Best-selling bakery, breakfast, lunch items
Returning customers will notice the familiar too.
“It’s a little smaller space but customers won’t see it,” Marika said. “It looks like before inside. The furniture is pretty much in the same place. And we didn’t change the menu so everything is the same.”
Besides Stefan’s ice cream, you’ll find breakfast, lunch and bakery items and coffee on that menu.
Apple cake, plum cake and cheesecake are best sellers ― all made with traditional German recipes.
“We had a lot of regulars come every day,” Marika said. “Offices ordered breakfast and lunch. The butter croissant with cheddar, bacon, tomato and egg is popular. The German roll, too, with liverwurst and cheese. At the moment, our bread comes directly from Germany. We plan to make it in the future.”
‘Local and very good’ coffee
Peter’s originally opened in the spot occupied by Java House.
“We kept their coffee,” Marika said. “We tried it and it tasted wonderful. It’s local and very good.”
She singled out the German ice coffee ― vanilla ice cream, coffee and whipped cream ― as another of the shop’s best sellers.
If you hadn’t tried Peter’s before, now’s your chance.
And Marika hopes you do.
“I would love to see all my customers and regulars,” she said. “And I would love to meet new ones in the new shop. There are such friendly people here. Everyone speaks to you. That’s not common in Germany. I think this is a better location with more people walking by. We will be happy here. That is the best wish I have.”
Note: The ice cream maker was not working when they opened Monday, May 15, so no ice cream was available. They hope to have it fixed in the next few days. Until then, the shop will close at 5 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. Call (239) 400-5282 for updates.
